Kristen Bell Raises Money For Special Needs Pets

Friday, July 30th, 2010

Kristen Bell, who credits her love of dogs for the reason she has been a vegetarian since the age of 11, has launched a new project to benefit the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the organization’s efforts to take care of rescued animals with special needs.

Bell is dedicating the project to her Labrador named Sadie who was recovered from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina. The actress explains that when she first met Sadie, the 11-year-old pooch was in bad shape with missing teeth and in need of surgery. Bell writes, “What I loved so much about Sadie was that – through it all – the pain, the loss she’d just experienced, the uncertainty of what was next, she was just this total loveball. I saw that all this dog needed was a place to hang her hat. And I was going to give it to her.”

The 30-year-old is using actor Edward Norton’s Crowdrise—a social networking and crowdsourcing platform—to raise the funds for HSUS. The money raised will be earmarked for special needs pets at HSUS shelter partners.

Kristen Bell eyes role in Drew Barrymore film

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2010

Kristen Bell is in negotiations to join Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski in “Whales,” a Working Title project for Universal.

Set in Cold War-era 1988, “Whales” tells the true story of a small-town news reporter (Krasinski) and a Greenpeace volunteer (Barrymore) who enlist the help of rival superpowers to save three majestic gray whales trapped under the ice of the Arctic Circle.

Bell will play a reporter from Los Angeles aiming for the big time who thinks her greatest assets are her looks.

Ken Kwapis is attached to direct “Whales,” which was formerly known as “Everybody Loves Whales.” It is based on the nonfiction book “Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event” by Tom Rose.

Working Title’s Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Liza Chasin are producing with Anonymous Content’s Steve Golin and Michael Sugar.

Universal vp production Erik Baiers is overseeing for the studio.

Bell is coming off of a starring gig in “When in Rome” and did a guest stint on the Starz comedy “Party Down.” She next appears in Disney’s September comedy “You Again” with Sigourney Weaver and Betty White and Screen Gems’ November musical drama “Burlesque,” with Christina Aguilera and Cher.

Bell is repped by CAA and Brookside Artists Management.

“Veronica Mars” Creator Insists Movie Is Not Dead

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Reports that the Veronica Mars movie is in the final stages of rigor mortis have apparently been greatly exaggerated. According to the franchise’s boss, Rob Thomas, there’s still a chance his teen sleuth will be reborn on the big screen.

“It’s not dead,” insists Thomas. “I continue to want to do it. It’s funny, because the rumors go around and around. Kristen Bell had said to somebody that I had written a script, and that wasn’t correct. I did have a treatment and a pitch, with which I went to Warner Bros. and [Mars producer] Joel Silver and said, ‘Here is the fastball version of the movie, the big studio version of the movie that I think we can make.’ And I think they did one of their brand-awareness surveys and were like, ‘We don’t know if we can make money with that.’ So it’s been back-burnered. But I still want to do it. I’m still happy to do it. We’re still looking into it.”

Thomas, whose Starz comedy, Party Down, kicks off its second season on April 23, acknowledges that the project has a built-in expiration date. “There is a bit of a ticking clock [because] Kristen Bell does continue to age,” he concedes of his 29-year-old leading lady. “And doing ‘teen detective’ [is a] dicey proposition. But frankly, I think Veronica Mars as a 30-year-old noir detective at some point in the future would still be interesting to me.

“In sort of the tidal wave and roller coaster of feeling upbeat or downbeat about it,” Thomas concludes, “I’d say I’m feeling in the middle right now.”
